Finding our voice – A Story of Success for Boys - transcript

Text on screen:  Finding our voice – A Story of Success for Boys.

[Child and father seated in school library cuts to classroom scenes].

Father:  Learning has to be fun because at this age it's difficult to realise why we're learning.

[Two women facing the camera cuts to classroom scenes and then back to them].

Woman 1: Boys, they do as much as they have to.

Woman 2: The bare minimum.

Woman 1: That's it

Woman 2: to get by.

Woman 1: But I think in something like this they put 100 percent in.

Woman2 (nodding):  Yup.

Woman 1: Absolutely.

[Classroom scene cuts to student talking to the camera].

Student:  Yeah it was hard but, I learnt to work together. Yeah, I'm pretty shy, I don't do that stuff.

[Student seated with mother in school library speaking to camera then cuts to classroom scene].

Student:  I wasn't confident about my drawing. I like drawing but I wasn't good at it so, this helped me a lot and that helped me with my creativity.

[Two women seated together facing the camera].

Woman 2: I've never seen him so engaged and wanting to do writing, and so excited about doing something.

[Scene of student receiving a certificate].

Yes, he is very proud of his achievement.

[Teacher speaking to camera cuts to classroom scenes].

Teacher:  It certainly changed my teaching practice. I avoid creative writing with these guys because it's not something that they seem to show any interest in, and interestingly enough, every group, just went out there crazy creative made-up stories and I thought that was fantastic.

[Two teachers facing the camera cuts to a classroom scene].

Teacher 2: So I think it can help, that reluctant writer to actually put words down and to actually create something.

[Student facing camera].

Student:  Something we all could relate to.

[Student seated with mother facing the camera cuts to classroom scene].

Student:  It was so different and so good in so many ways. I think everybody loved it actually.

[Student speaking to the camera].

Student:  Yeah I had a lot of fun.

[Young student talking cuts to classroom scene with another young student and a teacher engaged in a task].

Young student:  It's been really helpful, and it's really taught me a lot.

[Two teachers sit together facing the camera cuts to a scene of children seated with their hands up].

Teacher 1: So you could see it's a really good way to zap up those key competencies.

[Two women seated together].

Woman 1: It just opens the doors for them I think.

[Teacher voice over the scene of an assembly where students’ stories are being shared on a big screen].

Teacher voice:  The results are fantastic absolutely fantastic.

[Mother embraces child sitting next to her and chuckles].

Mother:  I'm very proud of him.

[Screen moves through a sequence of three pages of animation and text].
