48 hour SLAMs and inspiring creative writing
In 2014, the Ministry of Education piloted an innovative learning programme for boys identified as having problems engaging with traditional education methods.
The pilot involved using the 48HR SLAM programme to develop innovative resources and a parallel enquiry process, with the goal of finding new ways to lift boys’ achievement and success.
A comprehensive enquiry process was undertaken to ensure the learning was captured for sharing with other teachers and schools.
Graphic Novels

Graphic novels present their narrative primarily through pictures. Using them is an ideal way of encouraging reluctant readers to engage with a detailed extended text.
Arohanui: Revenge of the Fey - part of the graphic novel series The Matawehi Fables
Tells the magical tale of two iwi: one thriving, the other starving, desolate, and forced to enter in to a bargain to secure survival and a future for their people.
Teacher notes are designed to help teachers use the graphic novel to engage learners and help them develop their skills across all areas of literacy.
