Five boys' schools and five co-ed schools were selected on the basis of good student achievement, their ERO reports, and their pastoral care strategies.
Key strengths shared by these schools included:
- high-quality staff and student leadership
- a positive school culture with a strong focus on positive image
- relevant teaching and learning contexts
- constructive relationships.
Key challenges for the schools included:
- meeting the needs of a small percentage of disengaged boys, many of whom were from disadvantaged backgrounds
- supporting Māori and Pasifika boys
- strengthening some aspects of literacy teaching, and
- undertaking useful analyses of student achievement.
