Student:  The program that they're running at our school right now is really inspiring. I felt that it was really self-directed learning, and it was like, all on you. You had the responsibility, and you had the deadlines, and you had to meet them. And I think the students that are going ahead and doing that are going to be really successful in life.

You could see a big difference in their focus, but also in their perception of relevance of the task. Because often kids get bored at this age, because they can't see how it connects to their life outside of school. Whereas a task like this, the slam, it does.

Luke:  Once we told them that they have permission to do whatever they want, they can use their imaginations - they can be crazy, be wild, have fun - the rules change.

Dr Poskitt (voice):  All of those aspects have really helped them to manage their time and their own emotions, and it's also because it's a task they are enjoying. They are getting a sense of success, so that's helping.

Luke:  The kids were given a deadline, which is important. They couldn't muck around. There was a sort of spontaneity to the work because of that.Gives the whole thing a bit of energy.

[Student facing the camera talking cuts to classroom scenes].

Student: I think that it's good to meet deadlines, if you meet them then you can carry on with more and more.It opens up more doors.

[Student facing the camera].

Student: I think there's a sense of freedom, and that promotes creativity.
